Today, we went to Huwei in the center-south of Taiwan, Cliff's native place.
It is quite countryside, so what a surprise to find a brand new Starbucks there, open just 1 month ago.

This Starbucks would be just another coffee shop except it is using the old walls of a police center built 70 years ago during the Japanese rule.
Huwei has some nice Japanese-style buildings.

The logo is confirmation that it is indeed an old police center.

1st floor also has a parquet and furniture of that time.
The old days atmosphere is charming.
Very nice idea to recycle these historic places.

A little grooming for my pretty face!

What? No picture! I am not done yet with my hair!

This morning, we again cross the frontier to Jordan, this time at the Jordan River checkpoint, north of the country.

Cliff pose avec le Roi de Jordanie, Abdullah II.

Cliff poses with the Jordan King Abdullah II.

The scenery is relatively greener than the south since we are in the Jordan River valley.

At lunch, a young man shows us how to make Arab bread, Syria-style.
He is going to stick the paste against the walls of the oven behind him.

Several minutes later, job done!
We can have lunch.
Again some hummus and other dishes, but the fresh bread is delicious!

We now visit the 2000 year-old Roman archeological site of Jerash, one of the best preserved of the Middle East.

La porte d'Hadrien.

Hadrian's arch.

The Cardo, the Roman Main Street, which used to go to Damascus.
After all, Syria is only a 30min drive away.

La ville de Jerash derrière.

Jerash in the background.

Le Temple d'Artémis.

The Temple of Artemis.

A large mosaic from a Christian church of the site.

Sheep, as seen often here.
And Jordan has also imported Australian sheep and they seem to enjoy the local climate.

L'amphithéâtre.

The theatre.

And overview of the site with the Ovale Plaza in the foreground.
Very nice visit!

We then go to Amman the modern capital, where 3 out of 7 millions Jordanians live!
Not surprisingly, traffic jam.

The Greek-Roman theatre carved into the flanks of the mountain.

The small adjacent museum displays traditional costumes and a nice gallery of mosaics from Madaba.

Mosaics in the traditional way like those we saw in Madaba on the 1st day.

Here are some fine examples, and here we come to the end of this beautiful trip, Jordan especially.

Today, we start with the 2000 year-old ancient Roman city of Caesaria.
Only ruins remain today unfortunately!

Of course, there is a Roman theatre, but only the terraces remain.

There is a hippodrome too of course.

And an aqueduct to transport water from Mount Carmel.

We then go to Nazareth visit the Basilica of the Annunciation.
Nazareth is mostly Arab-populated.

The main entrance.
The current Church is new, of 1969, built by the Franciscans.

The grotto of the Annunciation, where Angel Gabriel tells Mary of her pregnancy of Jesus.
But we saw nothing because for whatever reason, it was covered by a plastic bag.

At the 2nd floor, a group of pilgrims celebrates Mass in Spanish.

Many countries contributed their own representation of Virgin Mary and Child.
Here, France.

Une mosaïque de la Grèce.

A mosaic from Greece.

We then go to Capernaum, by the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus used to preach.

The Franciscans built a church just above St-Peter's house, where Jesus stayed when in Capernaum.

We can see here St-Peter's house, of hexagonal shape.

And just nearby is this 2000 year-old synagogue, where Jesus used to preach.

We then go to the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus gave the sermon of the mount.
Beautiful verses which gave hope to the poors who had nothing, dixit our Arab-Palestinian Christian guide:

1. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
2. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
3. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
4. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
5. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
6. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
7. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
8. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

And to end the day, a boat cruise on the Sea of Galilee!

Today, we start heading North.
1st stop: Jaffa, on the Mediterranean Sea.
The high buildings are from Tel-Aviv, the 2nd city of Israel. But nothing special of interest.

Ici, l'Eglise Saint-Peter.

Jaffa is a very old harbour but with no significant archaeological remains.
Now, it is more like a beach resort.
Here, the Saint-Peter church.

I can so imagine the city people heading here for boating on week-ends.

The ambience is very relaxed, as Mr Cat illustrates it so well.

At noon, we have lunch at a Lebanese restaurant.

Again Arab breads (pita)!
We spread them with hummus (chickpea spread) and we add the rest.
They are good but we are having them everyday!

We continue to the North and reach Haifa in the afternoon.
It is the third city of Israel, built on the slopes of Mount Carmel.
The view of the bay is beautiful!
