I visited this famous temple 東大寺 (Great Eastern temple, Unesco World Heritage) in Nara in 2005. It dates from the 8th century but was re-built many times since. The temple holds many records: biggest wooden building, biggest Buddha bronze statue of 500 tons. Awesome and impressive but that's all. The Japanese Buddhist art usually does not move me much.
The Buddha hand positions represent "fearlessness".
