Typhon Meari (Taïwan)

Je suis censée être en pleine montagne pour 5 jours depuis hier.
La raison pour laquelle je ne suis pas: typhon Meari!
Quelle poisse!


I am supposed to be mountaineering for 5 days starting yesterday.
The reason why I am not: typhoon Meari!

Eglise catholique de Hsinchu (北大教堂, Taïwan)

Construite en 1958, c'est la plus grande église catholique de Hsinchu. Elle vient juste d'être rénovée, ce qui explique le rouge (trop) vif de la toiture.
L'église est très connue comme monument, même si les Catholiques ne constituent que 2% de la population Taïwanaise.
Heureusement, ils ont trouvé du renfort en la présence des nombreux fervents travailleurs Philippins, qui répétaient une chorale d'ailleurs quand on a visité l'église.


Built in 1958, this is the largest Catholic church of Hsinchu. It has just been renovated, which explains the (too) bright red of the roof.
The church is a well known monument in Hsinchu, even though Catholics only represent 2% of the Taiwanese population. Super minority.
Fortunately, they have found support in the many faithful Philipino workers, who incidentally were rehearsing a choir when we visited the church.

Montagne Chilai, 3ème jour (奇萊主北峰, Taïwan)

3ème jour: on rentre. Toujours ce sale temps.

3rd day: we go down. Still this bad weather.

On re-traverse la belle prairie de bambous du 1er jour.
Le temps s'éclaircit mais les sommets ont toujours la tête dans les nuages.
C'est ça, la montagne: imprévisible!

3rd day: the descent. Again, we pass by the beautiful bamboo meadows.
The sky gets clearer but the high summits are still in the clouds.
That's mountain weather: unpredictable!

Montagne Chilai, 2ème jour (奇萊主北峰, Taïwan)

Hélas! Voilà ce que nous réserve le climat célèbrement capricieux du mont Chilai au 2ème jour!
Brume et fine pluie: pas de paysages bien sûr.

But on the 2nd day, the famously changing weather of Mount Chilai decided to get rid of the sun!
Fog and rain: so much for the nice scenery.

Au sommet nord de Chilai (奇萊北峰 3605m).
Cliff est ravi de son 37ème sommet.


At the top of north peak of Chilai (3605m).
Cliff is very happy with his 37th summit.

Le brouillard persiste. On s'amuse comme on peut!


The fog won't leave. We try to have some fun still!

Voilà, 38ème sommet pour Cliff.
Les beaux paysages, ce sera pour la prochaine fois!

Montagne Chilai, 1er jour (奇萊主北峰, Taïwan)

On est partis pour une rando de 3 jours à la montagne Chilai (奇萊主北峰, 3605m).
Le 1er jour, tout va bien: soleil, paysages lumineux.
Le point de départ est l'hôtel 松雪樓, le plus haut de Taïwan à 3150m.

We went to mount Chilai (奇萊主北峰, 3605m) on a 3-day hike.
On the 1st day, everything is fine: sunny and bright scenery.

C'est parti!
6.8km pour atteindre le campement d'aujourd'hui.
La rando commence par des prairies de bambous.


Here we start!
6.8km before reaching camping site.
The hike starts with bamboo meadows.

La montagne au fond est le sommet nord de Hehuan (合歡北峰 3422m).


The summit in the background is the north peak of HeHuan.

Quelques rhododendrons sont encore en fleurs.

11AM: on arrive au chalet de 成功山屋, à 5km.


11AM: we reach the lodge of 成功山屋, at 5km.

Une petite pause et on repart. La vraie grimpe commence. Finies les douces prairies!


A little break and we move on. Start of the real climbing. No more gentle meadows!

Cela a l'air très dangereux mais pas trop en fait.


This seems very dangerous but actually not so.

4PM: enfin, on arrive à 6.8km, au chalet de 奇萊山屋, mais on n'y habitera pas.


4PM: finally, we reach 6.8km, at the lodge of 奇萊山屋, but we won't stay there.

On campe tout près. Fin de cette 1ère journée!


We camp just nearby. End of this 1st day!

Cyprès géants (鎮西堡A區神木群, 2375m, Taïwan)

Hier, on a été à une forêt des cyprès géants millénaires, à 3 heures de Hsinchu, en pleine montagne perdue peuplée d'aborigènes Atayal.

Yesterday, we went to a forest of thousand-years old red cypresses, a 3 hours drive from Hsinchu, in an isolated mountain area loosely populated by the Atayals.

La forêt est très belle, tapissée de fougères, où le soleil arrive à percer seulement par endroits.

The forest is beautiful, covered with ferns, where the sunlight hardly penetrates only here and there.

Les feuilles vert tendres d'érable aussi sont bien contentes d'avoir un peu de soleil.

The tender green leaves of the maple tree look quite happy too to grasp a bit of sunlight.

Papa a commandé des bouteilles de vin Bordeaux spécialement étiquetées "Pittikoun". Très marrant!
On goûtera ça au prochain retour en France.


Papa ordered bottles of Bordeaux wine with customized label "Pittikoun". Very funny!
To be tasted when we go back to France next year.
